Athens — If you’ve ever thought it would be nice to get another crack at the whole prom experience, now is your chance.
Whether you’d like to relive a wonderful time in your life, or replace a bad one with a great memory, the 2nd Chance Prom is the place for you.
This Saturday, from 7 p.m to midnight at the Athens Country Club, the Athens Public Education Foundation will be hosting the fundraising event, and everyone is invited.
Tickets are $50, both in advance and at the door. There will be food, dancing, crazy costumes and live and silent auctions.
Music will be provided by the very highly-regarded band “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” out of Dallas. The theme for the evening is disco, and appropriate ’70s attire is encouraged, though not required. A contest will be held for best costume, with a $100 prize.
The 2nd Chance Prom benefits the Athens Public Education Foundation, which has delighted teachers and students in the school district over the past several months with two separate rounds of grant awards.
The grants have been used to fund a science lab, purchase calculators, set up special science programs, create a weather station and send children on a science field trip, among many, many other things.
“Even if a person doesn’t have a child in the district, it’s still a wonderful opportunity to have fun,” said Sarah Grey, a foundation board member.
The joy on the faces of both teachers and students when they learn they have received a grant can be overwhelming.
So it is with the goal of raising funds to continue to award grants that the 2nd Chance Prom is being held.
The silent auction will feature several hand-painted stools, which were decorated by different artists around town, as well as art students at the high school and middle school.
There will also be mystery gifts for $50 that will be worth at least that amount, and up to $350 in value.
